Gainsbourg 2008 - Paris

gainsbourg.jpg

One of the best french composer of all times is finally getting its own proper exhibition. As his music is getting a new wave of attention from NewYork to Tokyo where a real gainsbourgmania is exploding, this exhibit is covering it all with tons of exclusive sculptures, pictures, videos, writings and even partitions straight from his wives and daughter's vaults.

This makes for a very deep and interesting visit and trip through the tortured soul of the man largely inspired by classical music greats like Chopin, turning little melodies into pop, funk and even reggae chart topping hits.

My Love (Russian: Моя любовь, Moya lyubov)

My-love.jpg

My Love is an Academy Award nominated paint-on-glass-animated 2006 short film directed by Aleksandr Petrov, based on A Love Story (1927) by Ivan Shmelyov. Work on the film took place in Yaroslavl, Russia over a period of three years. The craziest part about all this is that Aleksandr painted all the frames one by one with his fingers ! No brushes ! Just his hands and paint. The whole anime looks like a very impressive moving impressionist paint making it a very unique piece of art.

Here is a preview of this little romantic wonder. Cop it on DVD !

Q-Tip Renaissance

qtip_renaissance.jpg

This came out a couple days ago and they couldn't have come up with a better name for it really. This definitely sounds like the new Tribe Called Quest album.

The groove is here, the flow is here, the vibes are here. All is missing is the rest of the crew... and to tell you the truth that's not even to worry about ! The amazing part being that Q-Tip made it all by himself and got the music replayed by real players giving it the extra live feel that makes it all sound really original Still the whole thing remains very familiar and true to the tested ATCQ sound.

Recommended !

MESRINE with Vincent Cassel Part 1

mesrine1.jpg

This just came out in France and could definitely be a box office smasher worldwide with Vincent Cassel at the control. (Hopefully it gets the right distribution !)

For most non french readers, this name might not ring a bell. But Mesrine was actually the french public enemy number one in France and Canada in the 60's and 70's. And as you might guess, this makes for a wicked movie scenario.

This wonderfully filmed movie has it all : the intricated gangster story, the action-packed scenes, the skillfully played acting, the "noirceur", the suspense, the love, the psychological mind playing and a little something extra that makes it so special and not just another gangster movie. Music also plays a big role and this definitely looks like an action movie that could have been made by Hitchcock. Also Vincent Cassel's acting is just plain mind blowing and lifts the whole movie to another sphere. Go check it out !

P.S. : Part 2 coming out november 16th.

Jazzanova - All The Things

jazzanova_all_the_things.jpg

Whoah. What to say. If you're after the new dancefloor smashers, then this one is NOT for you ! But if you like beautiful music then this is the one.Well known for their remixes work, this incredible band has stepped their game up a dozen notches and has made what sounds like a meeting between Roy Ayers, the Beatles, Sly Stone, Stevie Wonder, Al Green, Marvin Gaye, and Curtis Mayfield in 2008. Soul, Jazz, funk, hip hop, bossa nova and even little touches of house, this album glows pure class and fly grooves.

Tight orchestrations, vibrant melodies and /opulent harmonies provided by silky strings and vocals are coupling with fat beats and basslines. They manage to create songs that grasp you inside and make your feet move at the same time./ Indeed arrangements are higly sculptured yet simple and catchy and the whole thing is just wonderfully put to light by the dope collaborations with - to name but a few : rapper Phonte, Ben Westbeech, Dwele and Leon Ware. This makes for an ecclectic yet perflectly homogenous album that has the splendor and class of 70's Motown, with the energy and polish of now.

Gorgeous album ! Joyful listening is guaranteed ! Classic Material !
